Implant Dentistry is the most advanced therapy available to replace teeth today.  In many cases implants can be placed at the same appointment as a tooth is extracted, or 6-8 weeks after the extraction.  Single replacement implant supported crowns negate the need to involve healthy adjacent teeth
(required for bridge support).  The implant acts as a root of a tooth, once integrated into the bone; a crown is then screwed into the implant.  The implant-retained crown is as secure as a healthy natural tooth, as seen in the x-ray below.

Implants support and maintain healthy bone, are not subject to the effect of decay, and are not affected in the same way as natural teeth are to gum disease.  However, special care and maintenance is required in order to keep the tissue healthy around an implant.

Those with multiple missing teeth, or no teeth, can benefit by the strategic placement of several implants in the upper or lower jaws to support removable dentures or as cemented (or screwed in) fixed bridges, (this assuming there is adequate volume of remaining bone).  If there is insufficient bone, grafting procedures can be preformed to increase the volume of bone
6-12 months prior to implant placement.
It is important to treat implant-supported restorations as you would your natural teeth.  Regular cleaning and examinations are required to maintain your implant-supported restorations.
